Northland meth bust: Police take control of homes worth $1.2m after raids uncovered guns, drugs

An investigation into a large-scale drug syndicate in Northland has been ongoing since July when nine arrests were made and weapons and drugs were seized.

Police have taken control of two properties worth over $1.2 million as a part of an ongoing investigation into a large-scale drug syndicate in Northland.

The two properties in the Wheki Valley, where a number of firearms and drugs were found, were restrained under orders issued by Whangarei High Court.

The action was result of a financial investigation alongside the Northern Asset Recovery Unit.


Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston, from Northland CIB, said restraining the property sent a clear message that police were committed to removing the profit from unlawful activity.

“The people who benefit from crime feed off the misery of others and take advantage of vulnerable people in our community. It causes immeasurable harm and entire families suffer,” he said.


Earlier in July, police arrested nine people in a four-day operation dubbed Operation Nortiate, investigating the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine.

As part of the operation, more than 150 staff executed search warrants at nine properties in Wheki Valley, Hukerenui, Helena Bay, Raumanga and Puwera.

The properties restrained on Friday, were in addition to around $60,000 worth of stolen property recovered as apart of the operation in July, along with drugs such as heroin, cannabis and methamphetamine.

Police also recovered two Tasers and seven firearms, including a 357 Magnum Pistol, a shotgun, as well as two semi-automatic rifles.

But officer still need help to locate a Dodge Hellcat muscle car with the registration KAA30.

The car is also to be forfeited to the Crown under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009.
