Teacher Charged

Green Hope High teacher, coach faces DWI, child abuse charges :: WRAL.com

— A teacher and coach at Green Hope High School was arrested over the weekend after he was found passed out in his running car in Cary with a child in the back seat, according to court documents.

Patrick Christian Shaw, 43, of 215 Austenite Lane in Cary, was charged with driving while impaired and misdemeanor child abuse.

Police found Shaw unconscious behind the wheel of his car with the engine running outside a Sheetz gas station at the corner of N.C. Highway 55 and Kit Creek Road at about 1 a.m. Saturday. Open containers of alcohol were inside the vehicle, and Shaw smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words, police noted.

Shaw’s alcohol content was recorded as 0.09, which is above the level under which a driver is considered impaired under North Carolina law.

The child abuse charge stems from “operating a motor vehicle while subject to an impairing substance with the child in the motor vehicle,” an arrest warrant states.

Shaw is a career and technical education teacher at Green Hope High and coaches the track team, according to school websites.
